History of doTerra – Building Another Company

It’s normal for anybody to have different beliefs, especially if you’re in a company that operates with millions of products. But what happened to Young Living and doTerra is somewhat different.

The founders of doTerra were originally the members of Young Living (a company founded in 1993 that also sells essential oils) executive branch. Because of their indifference, the 7 executives of the latter company decided to quit and create their own essential oil MLM company.

The 7 executives namely: David Stirling, Mark A. Wolfert, Robert J. Young, Dr. David K. Hill, Emily Wright, Corey B. Lindley, and Gregory P. Cook later on decided to put up their own company names doTerra.

Founded in 2008

David Sterling standing as the CEO, doTerra (“Gift of the Earth” in Latin) was created in order to “share the highest quality essential oils in the world” as per their website. But if you ask me, it was made to become a direct competitor from their last company.

doTerra believes that in all these years of having essential oils in the market, there’s still no standard quality for producing these supplies which is why they created their own standardization.

CPTG

Certified Pure Therapeutic Guide (CPTG) is a certification created by doTerra to ensure that all their products have undergone the correct procedure; having the purest oil without altering or adulteration done.

A lot of their “wellness advocates” have the misconception that this certification was given by a third party or FDA, which in fact, it is not.

I’ll explain this certification later on in the article.

Lawsuit vs doTerra

The lawsuit was filed when the Young Living founder, Donald Gray Young, filed a case against the 7 executives for allegedly violating the employment contracts and stealing their valuable trade secrets.

The lawsuit ran for over 5 years. In 2017, doTerra won against the lawsuit that was filed by Young Living and received $1.8 million for legal fees and other costs. The judge ruled out that Donald Young was pursuing the case in bad faith against his previous executives.

doTerra Product List

What’s great about doTerra is that they offer multiple products to answer the vast needs and wants of their customers.

They have covered almost everything that you need starting with their signature essential oil products, personal care line, supplements, diffusers, and more. Their website also shows you all the kits that they offer so you’ll see everything that you need in one package.

As of today, doTerra is offering at least 42 single oils, and 19 proprietary blends to the market. Each bottle will have a size from 5mL to 15mL. Some of these bottles are on a stick/roll-on style for easier application to wherever you want to put it.

So, I’ll start presenting you with the doTerra product list.

The essential oils of doTerra are separated into 6 categories:

  1. Single Oils

  5. Deep Blue Series

  6. DigestZen Series

In today’s world, everybody is looking for products that will help them enhance or rejuvenate their skin, and doTerra is on the right track with their personal care line.

  1. Verage Skin Care

  2. Body Care

  3. doTerra Salon Essentials Hair Care

If you want to take care of your skin, then it’s important that you also take care of your health and what you take into your body and doTerra has got you covered with their supplements product line.

  1. Weight Management

  2. Daily Vitality

  3. doTerra Women

  4. Specialized Supplements

  5. Digestive Health

  6. Children’s Supplements

If you’re interested in either using or selling the products of doTerra as their “wellness advocate”, then you have to make sure that you understand how all their products work. This can be especially tough because you would need to present each product as unique as possible (in fact almost all of them are just oils).

Prices range from $13.33 (Wild Orange Essential Oil) a bottle to a staggering $366.67 (Rose Essential Oil).

The biggest question right now is if you’re interested to sell these products and how will you do it? I’ll discuss the doTerra Compensation Plan.

doTerra Compensation Plan

Unlike other MLM companies today, the compensation plan of doTerra is rather simple. There are no complicated match-ups, programs, and large monthly quotas.

As an affiliate or what doTerra calls, “wellness advocate”, you have 3 ways to earn an income.

  1. Retail Profit – For every $100 purchase of your personal buyer or you, you get a 25% retail profit. This is paid to you on a monthly basis.

  2. Fast Start Bonus – If your recruit purchases on their first 30 days and have at least 100 PV Loyalty Rewards, then you can get the following:

    1. First Level – 20%

    2. Second Level -10%

    3. Third Level – 5%

  3. Power of 3 Bonus – This will be explained in the 3rd photo that I’ll be showing you.

Free to Give Program

I find it intriguing that doTerra is also “concerned” about the future of their Wellness Advocates. In their Free to Give Program, they try to convince the people under them to pay the four common debts: medical bills, loans, car payments, and credit cards.

Once the Wellness Advocates pays off one debt, they will be able to get a token symbolizing their achievement and success in life.

Wholesale Customer

Being a wholesale customer is somewhat different from becoming a wellness advocate. This program is for the people who would like to use doTerra products and purchase them at a wholesale price. So what are the benefits that you can get if you become a wholesale customer?

  • Product discount – 25% discount from retail prices

  • Loyalty Rewards Program of doTerra – Receive 10-30% of orders back in points for you to redeem free products

  • Shipping Reward Points – You have the option if you want to redeem free products from your shipping points

  • Free Product – If you place an order worth 125 PV or more in a month, then you will receive a free product for that month

  • Renewal Fee “Covered” – Once you’re a member as a wholesale customer, your yearly renewal fee will be worth $25 and you get a free bottle of Peppermint Essential Oil.

What I Like About doTerra

Compared to other MLM companies in the market, you will get to know a lot of doTerra on their website. From the history of the company, down to their individual products, their certification program, opportunities, and values as a company.

CPTG Quality Testing

Like what I’ve mentioned earlier, doTerra has created their own testing and certification program for all their products to pass, and for you to be ensured that everything that you use is “pure” and they call this the Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG).

There are 8 tests that doTerra follows to ensure that they have “pure” oils, these are:

  1. Organoleptic Testing – this involves human sense to check the quality of the oil

  2. Microbial Testing – checking any presence of biohazardous microorganisms

  3. Gas Chromatography Testing – checking the chemical properties and molecular weight of the oil

  4. Mass Spectrometry Testing – this is done to check the composition of the oil

  5. Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy – this is done to ensure that the consistency and potency of the oil has passed

  6. Chirality Testing – uses 3D orientation to check the molecules in the oil

  7. Heavy Metal Testing – this check if the oils have any metals in them, because the oils shouldn’t have any

Education on How to Use Oils

doTerra also does their best when it comes to educating their customers on how to use their oils properly. On this page, you’ll get to see the three different ways to use their oils. These are:

  1. Aromatic

  2. Topical

  3. Internal

Global Botanical Network

doTerra is proud to say that they have distillers and farmers in over 40 countries worldwide. They say that creating a long-lasting relationship with their partners enables them to work effectively and efficiently.

Along with their global partners, doTerra created the Co-Impact Sourcing and doTerra Healing Hands Foundation in order to help the communities around them.

Wellness Topics

In addition to everything that I’ve just said, doTerra also provides education for their customers. On this page, you’ll be able to see different wellness topics that are specific for your needs and the type of essential oil that you can use.

Warning Letter, Complaints & Rating

doTerra is not all rainbows and butterflies. Just like Young Living, doTerra has received a warning letter from FDA because of the false claims that their Wellness Advocates markets.

It’s also the best time to repeat that the CPTG of doTerra is from their personal trademark and is not officially from any third-party laboratory. The company is also not accredited by the FDA.

If you check out BBB.org, you’ll see multiple complaints against doTerra. What also amazes me is their ability to respond to each complaint in a professional manner. Although the company does not have any rating from the said site, they are, however, registered in BBB, org.

Here are just some of the complaints that you’ll find in the said site:

Legit or Scam?

Is doTerra oils a scam? I don’t think so. Ever since they’ve started in 2008, doTerra was able to distinguish themselves from the other MLM companies with essential oils. So, it’s easy to say that NO, doTerra is not an imitation of Young Living at all.

Do I recommend using doTerra essential oils? Yes. I’ve personally tried it and it really works wonders with my migraines.

Do I recommend you to become a wellness advocate? No. I already know a lot of MLM companies and how you can supposedly earn a lot and get your financial freedom, but it’s not as easy as it sounds. You would need to work your butt off, physically in order for you to do personal selling and recruitment.

What I Recommend

If you’re really interested in earning a passive income, then I suggest you think about doing Affiliate Marketing and Wealthy Affiliate.

Personally speaking, I’ve tried to join multiple MLM companies in the past and believe me when I say that it’s one hell of a difficult job.

If you don’t like convincing people to buy something from you and you don’t like to get out much, then the Wealthy Affiliate might just be the best option for you. Here are some of the reasons why you should try it:

  • No recruitment

  • No start-up cost

  • Complete step-by-step guide

  • No hard-selling

  • Great community of marketers

  2. Actually an interesting prospect is this doterra to be honest. I never knew that I could actually be interested in an MLM platform again but reading through this doterra MLM review and how it operates, I must say that they are quite encouraging and may be worth investing in. Though it still comes with the hurdles of recruitment the investment package here isn’t too much and worth trying out

  3. Hi Cory, do Terra is definitely MLM. I have never used essential oils, so what are they used for? As I read through the article but I don’t get a full understanding of the purpose of these oils. I’m not convinced that oils really do what they are advertised to do.

I do see the financial opportunity with the business if one can create a client base but if not one could get stuck with products or paying for something that has a slim chance of paying off. Thanks for a very informative post.

    • Hey Derrick, essential oils are used for a number of things. They can be used as a sleep aid, relief of general aches and pains, and many other issues. I have personally never used essential oils so I can’t speak on the effectiveness of them.

Getting stuck with a surplus of products and not being able to sell them is one of the downfalls of being in an MLM business. That’s why I don’t recommend MLM for making money online.

Affiliate marketing is the way to go. No overhead, easy to get started and you are not beholden to anyone company and their rules like you are with an MLM company. The best way to get started in affiliate marketing is with a company called Wealthy Affiliate. This community of affiliate marketers has everything you need to start and run a successful affiliate marketing business.

So if you are serious about making money online check out Wealthy Affiliate. You will be glad you did!
